Who does not recall Frank Sinatra’s song this time of year?

“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire

Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos…”

Chestnuts are roasted at home and on the street all around the world.  From October to Epiphany and beyond, the city streets are filled with chatter, song, smoke and the buzz of the holidays.

This quick recipe is a family favorite!
For an easier digesting version, we also suggest to cooking the chestnuts in boiling water with aniseed, or sprinkling them with anise after they are roasted.

Heat the oven to 200ºC.

Spread a kilo of chestnuts on a tray.

Cut an X shape incision in the top to prevent them from bursting in the oven.

Roast for 40 minutes and serve.

Be careful not to burn your fingers ☺

Health benefits of Chestnuts

Chestnuts are high in fiber, and as you know, dietary fiber helps clean your gastrointestinal tract, which aids in the movement of foods through your digestive system… optimizing the nutritional benefits of everything you eat.

A 2010 study conducted by the Department of Biotechnology at Chosun University in Korea demonstrated that chestnut flower extract has potent antioxidant properties and can help protect against skin damage from melanoma, or skin cancer.

Chestnuts also contain potassium, an important mineral that may decrease some of the risk factors associated with heart disease.

Happy Roasting!
